There are two types of 'Shotguns' in the N.O.V.A. series. Both are accurate close-ranged weapons.
Regular Shotgun (Pump-Action)Edit
The shotgun is a powerful close range weapon with spreadfire that was introduced in the first N.O.V.A. It inflicts heavy damage at close range, but is inaccurate when fired at long range.
The shotgun is a very useful gun in the campaign. In N.O.V.A it can kill all enemies with one shot if close enough. In N.O.V.A. 2, it almost always one hit kills the weak enemies, and it can usually defeat the heavier enemies in 2-6 shots. (Even Powered Assault Armors can be defeated with one Headshot.) Though the shotgun inflicts heavy damage, a pumping action is required after every action, making it lengthy to defeat enemies taking more than one shot. Also, the shotgun has a relatively low ROF so misses can be costly.
The shotgun is not a very good weapon in multiplayer. Enemies have more health and weapons that don't require a pumping action after every shot(The only thing to one shot them is get close enoug). If the shotgun is your weapon of choice, then the automatic shotgun is recommended. If you do use it, try to walk around quickly so it is harder for opponents to hit you while you're chambering the next shell.
Automatic Shotgun Edit
The automatic shotgun is a close range weapon with spreadfire in N.O.V.A. 2 and 3. It is exactly like its cousin, the shotgun, except that there is no need to pump the shotgun after each shot, making it more effective and desirable. But the ASG is slightly less accurate than the normal SG.
The automatic shotgun appears in N.O.V.A. 2 and 3's campaign. In N.O.V.A 2, it is introduced to Kal by Yelena on the alien ship Son of Victory and in N.O.V.A 3, it is picked up by Kal on San Fransisco.
The automatic shotgun is a very viable weapon choice for multiplayer. It only takes 3 - 5 shots to kill an enemy and the moderate rate of fire means that you can easily get many shots on opponents. Due to the fact that the shotgun is not very accurate, it should not be used at long range because you will lose precious ammo while inflicting almost no damage on the enemy.
